You stumbled upon Lola's 25 square meters on a fucking Sunday night. The familiar chimes of Taylor Swift's Blank Space echo throughout the building. People start singing the lyrics. What is the problem? Why can't Cambridge students hold back when they hear their favorite American friend sing an exaggerated song?
The reason must be deeper than the fact that we are all basic and have grown up with it. I spoke to the co-chair of the Taylor Swift Appreciation Society (CUTSAS) at Cambridge University, Basma Khan, to find out why and how they sold over 2,000 tickets in their first year, when societies established have not yet reached similar figures.
Basma attributes this to the fact that Swift's discography is so vast that it's possible people have their own preferences. From the sweet ballads of folklore to the youthful angst of Speak Now, Swift has covered a wide variety of sounds across her ten albums. There truly is a Taylor Swift song for everyone. And since everyone knows at least three Taylor Swift songs, it's a common denominator in most people's musical tastes.
Combined with the fact that club nights are 8-11pm. Mr. Basma recognizes the importance of going to bed early with the academic rigor of this institution: “People like a friendly and safe environment to make music together and sing Taylor Swift songs. and the fact that it fits so well into people's schedules is what makes these evenings so popular.
Another reason Taylor Swift's contagious bug is circulating Cambridge is how perfectly her albums fit Michaelmas. Basma explains how Listening Nights (next is Midnights at Hidden Rooms on November 4) provide an environment where people can share their thoughts on the album and find solace in their grief. "People are talking about it and bringing their boyfriends and non-Swifty friends who then discover Taylor's music."
Taylor Swift's tenth studio album was released on October 21. Expectations for its first original release since Evermore were high. Did you meet for the first time? It seems that producer Jack Antonoff's new sonic experimentations, namely electric pop combined with a lack of soulful lyricism, made this album disappointing and unforgettable.
Obviously, Jack Antonoff had experimented with synthesizers and electronic pop. However, the lack of dimension and seemingly rushed production left it sounding flat. Each song could be described as a watered down version of a previous Swift track. For example, Maroon is a cross between "Call It What You Want" and "King of My Heart" with creepy lyrics like "And I selected you / The one I was dancing with in New York". soak all your letters?
Swift's strength lies in her storytelling skills. Each of their previous albums had a strong theme. A subject directly related to your personal or professional life. Reputation was for his legal battles with Scooter Braun. Lover is devoted to her longtime boyfriend, Joe Alwyn. What is "Midnight" about? It oscillates between love songs, anthems of revenge and evocative melodies, leaving in its wake a jumble of mismatched songs.
Even when a song has a clear theme, its lyrics fall flat. The biggest disappointment on the album has to be Snow on The Beach (feat. Lana Del Rey). As they are both iconic writers of the 21st century, their combined talents are few. If the song is beautiful and poetic, it lacks what most characterizes these artists: substance.
In addition to her poetry, Swift is also known for her bridges such as All Too Well, Dear John, and Cruel Summer. Each album has a series of major bridges. However, Midnights doesn't have a single one. The result is that each song sounds like a Taylor Swift song without sounding like a Taylor Swift song per se, this album lacks the essential charm of their music.
But at the end of the day, it's still Taylor Swift. Charts will be on top, records will be broken and before we know it, all of these songs will be etched in our heads.
