Vanessa Hudgens, the Asian-American actress whose career began with Disney's High School Musical, will direct a travel documentary in the Philippines, the country where her mother was born.
The Untitled Project will be filming in Palawan and Manila in March. Paul Soriano is on board as director, producer and executive producer. TEN17P's Mark A. Victor will also serve as executive producer. So far, no distributor, broadcaster or streaming platform has been announced.
Soriano's recent work includes directing the 2019 film Mañanita and the Manny Pacquiao biopic Kid Kulafu.
The documentary is meant to explore the relationship between Hudgens and his Filipino mother, Gina, who immigrated to the United States when she was 25, and Hudgens' sister, Stella.

Since High School Musical, Hudgens has played key roles in Spring Breakers, Gimme Shelter, Bad Boys for Life and the Oscar-nominated musical Tick, Tick...Boom! Hudgens produced and starred in The Knight Before Christmas and all three episodes of the Princess Switch series for Netflix. Hudgens will star in the upcoming films French Girl and Bad Boys 4.
"I feel like our story is so relevant to so many women around the world," Hudgens said in a statement announcing the documentary. "The more we can share, the more we can help each other."
“We are honored to work with Vanessa on this film project. It is inspiring to note that with all that she has achieved in life, she wants to rediscover her Filipino roots and pay homage to her mother's country. this opens the doors to many more collaborations," Soriano said in a statement.
Soriano previously produced A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery (2016), which received a special award at the Berlin International Film Festival, and Transit in 2013, which was selected as the Filipino entry in the Film category at the Oscars. He is also the Presidential Creative Advisor to the Philippine government.
