League sources confirmed to The Athletic on Tuesday that the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks have reached an agreement on a trade that would send 20-point scorer and former All-Defense member Mikal Bridges across the East River.
According to sources who spoke with The Athletic, the Knicks will send a deal that includes Bojan Bogdanović, four unprotected first-round selections, a Milwaukee Bucks protected first-round choice from 2025, a 2028 first-round pick exchange, and a 2026 second-round pick. The news was initially reported by ESPN.
In exchange, New York receives the much-anticipated, faceless star for which it has been waiting since the present government assumed office in 2020.
With 50 victories, a No. 2 seed, and a playoff run that stopped one win short of the Eastern Conference finals, Bridges will join a team that is gunning for a title. of addition, he will reunite Josh Hart, Donte DiVincenzo, and Jalen Brunson as the fourth player of the "Nova Knicks," a group of four former Villanova players that has moved to Madison Square Garden.
This was the plan when Knicks president Leon Rose took over four years ago: preserve the team's first-round selections, acquire picks from other teams, and accumulate tradeable contracts while getting better every year. In the end, trading for Bridges is what happens.
He'll fit into an undetermined starting lineup for the next campaign. Brunson, DiVincenzo, OG Anunoby, Julius Randle, and Isaiah Hartenstein were all members of the Knicks' winning first unit; however, on June 30, Hartenstein and Anunoby will be eligible to sign free agency contracts. Their fates remain unknown for the time being.
There are others confined to the Knicks as well.
In 2024–2025, Hart and Miles McBride will play their debut seasons after signing three-year contracts. Both Bridges and Mitchell Robinson have a few years left on their contracts; the Knicks will pay Bridges $24.9 million in the following season and $23.3 million in this one.
Bridges gives a two-way squad an additional two-way presence.
He was a highly effective role player who contributed to the Phoenix Suns' 64 victories in 2022, making him a worthy member of the All-Defense team. Once he arrived as the focal point of the Kevin Durant deal, he evolved into an individual scorer in Brooklyn and took on more responsibility there.
His projected position with the Knicks falls in the middle between his previous roles as a spot-up shooter and cutter in Phoenix and his first choice status after crossing the bridge.

After finishing fourth in the NBA in scoring and sixth in MVP voting last season, Brunson is returning to action. Randle has been named an NBA All-Star twice. If he comes back, Anunoby will take shots even if he isn't really a guy who dominates the ball. Together, he and Bridges would form one of the most formidable defensive wing tandems in the NBA.
During the previous Brooklyn season, Bridges averaged 19.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists on 44-37-81 shooting.
With this move, the Nets are taking a different approach. Ever since they acquired Bridges, they have turned down bids for him. After a 50-loss campaign, they embark on a rebuild that involves acquiring a large number of draft selections.
The Knicks owe the Nets four unprotected first-round picks in 2025, 2027, 2029, and 2031. In addition, the Phoenix Suns possess three of Brooklyn's unprotected first-round selections, the Dallas Mavericks control another, the Philadelphia 76ers own a protected 2027 selection, and the Suns and Brooklyn have exchanged 2028 first-round picks.
The 41-year run is ended by the Bridges trade. The latest trade between the Knicks and Nets occurred in 1983.
