Colin Farrell was so transforming as the Penguin—yes, that's Colin Farrell beneath all those prosthesis—that the actor landed The Batman villain his own spin-off series. Starting on HBO this autumn, The Penguin will highlight the comeback of nightclub owner Oswald Cobblepot as he aims to seize Gotham's criminal empire for personally.
Ahead of the San Diego Comic-Con panel later this month, HBO is going all out for The Penguin to help promote the series. Along with a fan gathering at a reconstruction of Penguin's Iceberg Lounge, Matt Reeves, the director of Batman, Farrell, and showrunner Lauren LeFranc (Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) are scheduled to reveal a new teaser. Hopefully Reeves will also discuss his vision for the Caped Crusader's franchise going forward as well as the road ahead for The Batman Part II. For what we know thus far about The Penguin, keep reading below.
What is the Penguin's topic?
The streets remain flooded after Gotham City is destroyed at the conclusion of The Batman. But the Penguin finds all that water ideal. Head of original content for HBO, Sarah Aubrey claims, "The goal of this is to show what Oz's life is like and that's very much in the streets of Gotham...as a hustler and a strategist with his own ambitions."
Is The Penguin Linked to the New DC Universe?
Not one. The Penguin straight copies Reeves's The Batman (2022), starring Zoë Kravitz and Robert Pattinson. Series elements will also align with the second movie, The Batman Part II, scheduled for 2026 release. The Penguin has none bearing on James Gunn's revamped DC Universe (DCU). Neither does either The Batman nor The Batman Part II.
With a movie dubbed The Brave and The Bold, directed by The Flash's Andy Muschietti, Gunn has personal ideas for Batman the not too distant future. Along with any other DC Comics endeavor not inside the official DCU canon, Reeves' Batman stories will persist in their own reality branded "DC Elseworlds." And what about the Joker films Todd Philips shot with Joaquin Phoenix? Likewise is true for a whole different cosmos. So far are you with me? Since there is more. Additionally mentioned in the new DCU is Reeves' development of an Ashes Asylum series reported on by Deadline. "He'll be producing stories both inside his The Batman universe and inside the DCU," Gunn clarified on Threads. I understood.
Whose Penguin Premiere is scheduled?
The Penguin will air on HBO and online on Max this September. Though The Penguin's Comic-Con panel will probably divulge the debut date, HBO has not yet announced the official release date. If not, at least you may ride in the Penguin's "iconic Purple Maserati." Though it seems like times have changed, I recall when the Penguin patrolled Gotham in a giant yellow duck. Perhaps we will at least see some penguins sporting pyrotechnics affixed to their backs.
