Higher education costs in the United States always seem to spark a fierce debate. With millions of Americans still struggling to repay their student loans, several loan forgiveness schemes have been touted in order to ease their financial burden.
In 2022, current American president Joe Biden introduced the Student Debt Relief Plan, which aimed at reducing student loans by up to 10,000 dollars for those earning less than 125,000 dollars, while Pell Grant recipients could waive up to 20,000 dollars.
While the plan marked a win for those in favor of waiving off student loans, the bill was ultimately blocked with the United States Supreme Court now deliberating on the issue.
With the current outstanding loan amount now at 1.75 trillion dollars, measures must be taken to ease the debt bubble that continues to grow with each passing year.
