On Saturday, June 1, the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections of 2024 came to an end. The next day, June 2, saw at least two major changes across the nation: Amul, a major milk supplier in India, increased the price of its milk in all varieties, while the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced a nationwide toll hike of an average of 5%.

On April 1, the yearly adjustment to highway toll prices was scheduled to go into effect. Nevertheless, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections caused the raise to be postponed. A day after the elections were over, the toll charge was changed.

"The State Regulatory Commission may decide to proceed with the necessary procedures for the electricity rate determination. Tariff awards, however, will only be granted after the relevant state's polling has concluded, that is, following the state's polling date or days. In response to a request for clarification, the ECI indicated in a statement to the Ministry of Road and Transport in April that "user fees may be seen in the context of the power tariff as mentioned in the Commission's instruction cited above."

Every year, the toll price adjustment is revised in response to variations in inflation based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI). A news source on Sunday cited a top NHAI official as stating, "The new user fee will come into effect from 3.6.2024."

This implies that drivers will have to pay extra money to go over the approximately 855 user charge plazas on the national highway network where a fee is imposed. Employees at toll booths in Tamil Nadu distributed leaflets to customers about the toll increase at some toll plazas. Additionally, some toll plazas used loudspeakers to make announcements.

The shift in Amul milk pricing is another such adjustment that coincides with the conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Amul has raised the price of their fresh pouch milk countrywide as of today, June 3. The 500ml of Amul Gold now costs ₹2, the 500ml and 1 L of Amul Taaza now cost ₹1 and ₹2, respectively, while the liter of Amul Buffalo Milk now costs ₹3.

The cost of operating and producing milk has increased overall, which is the reason for this price rise. This year, our member unions have also raised farmers' pay by around 6–8%," the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which sells dairy products under the 'Amul' brand, said on Sunday.

"The purpose of the price revision is to support our milk producers in maintaining fair milk prices and to motivate them to increase their milk production," the statement said.
