Former President Donald Trump was evacuated to safety on Sunday following what the FBI described as a possible assassination attempt at his golf course in West Palm Beach.

Trump Attack

The event occurred almost exactly two months after a gunshot at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which injured Trump and killed one supporter.
Details concerning the newest incident and the suspect, identified as Ryan Routh by US media, are still coming. Here's what we know so far.

How was the suspect discovered?

The incident occurred at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, around 15 minutes from Trump's Florida home, Mar-a-Lago.
The gunman was first noticed by Secret Service agents, who were sweeping the course ahead of the former president as he played. According to police, the operatives normally go one hole ahead to do security checks.

The muzzle of a rifle, initially described as an AK-47-style rifle by County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, was discovered jutting out of the foliage that lines the course. Trump stated that he was approximately 300-500 yards (272-557m) away from the gunman at the time.

How did the suspect get caught?

When the agents spotted the gunman, they opened fire, firing four to five bullets.

Sheriff Bradshaw said the man dropped the rifle and escaped in a car, leaving behind the weapon, two knapsacks, a scope for shooting a weapon, and a GoPro camera.

Who is Ryan Routh?

Details about the suspect's background are slowly emerging.
Mr Routh's son, Oran, characterized him as a "loving and caring father" in an interview with the US media.
"I don't know what has happened in Florida, and I hope things have just been blown out of proportion, because from the little I've heard it doesn't sound like the man I know to do anything crazy, much less violent," Oran told CNN in an interview.

What will happen next?

During the same press conference as the sheriff, Jeffrey Veltri of the FBI Miami Field Office stated that the bureau was spearheading investigations alongside other law enforcement agencies.
"We've deployed a number of resources, including investigative teams, crisis response team members, bomb technicians, and evidence response team members," Veltri said, adding that the "full resources of the FBI" as well as the US Secret Service, the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office, and the Martin County Sheriff's Office were mobilized.
