Imagine you're at a very exclusive club that includes some of the biggest names in country music and a guy named Eric Church. Ray Fulcher can do it because he's into it.
Fulcher is no stranger to writing hit country songs. He helped his friend Luke Combs write his first two albums and has a major role on Luke's next album. Among the hits you co-wrote? "When It Rains It Pours", "Lovin' On You", and Eric Church's duet "It Does To Me".
But as a budding singer, Ray isn't shy about recording a song written by someone else. Especially if that other is your idol, Eric Church mentioned above. Like Luke, Ray credits seeing "Chief" live while in college as inspiring him to try country music.
On the next episode of my podcast, Write You a Song, Ray says he was looking for songs for his first full-length album, Spray Painted Lines, and on a whim asked his publisher if there were any songs. 'Eric. Church that has never been admitted.
They found a few and "...this song just kept coming out on top," he said. Betty's Battle for Love is a first-person tale of two friends whose love for the same girl separated them...but then brought them together. It was one of the first songs Eric had written when he arrived in Nashville, and no one had ever played it. Ray couldn't believe his luck.
"The reason I love this song is because it's the epitome of church," he says. So he recorded it. But before continuing, Ray called Eric at the request of his producer.
"He said, 'Remind me of that song again? "And we sent him over to listen and he said, 'Yeah, man, I'd be honored. Tell him to cut it'"
What's really cool, says Fulcher, "is that only 5 people can record anthems: Eric Church, Terri Clark (The World Needs a Drink), Keith Urban (We Were), Morgan Wallen (Quittin' Time) and Me" .
But wait, wait.
Since Fulcher made this statement in early February, it turns out that another artist has now been added to this very short list: Ray's friend Luke Combs. He released the tracklist for his upcoming album, which is due out March 24, and of the 18 songs, one was co-written by Travis Meadows, Jonathan Singleton and Eric. It's called "My Song Will Never Die".
So that makes six artists.
Anyway, it's a very good club.
