It's no secret that audiences love to be wowed by their screens from time to time.
With global franchises like the Fifty Shades movies or intimate historical reimaginings of Lady Chatterley's Lover, the "sexy" movie has become a genre all its own. It's no surprise, then, that Netflix is embarking on an adaptation of a novel known for its exploration of the dangers of lust and the morality behind desire.
So here's what you need to know about obsession.
Know More: Obsession Netflix British Thriller Series Sets April 2023
What’s Obsession about?
When the enigmatic Anna Barton begins a passionate affair with William, her fiancé's father, he falls into an obsessive spiral. But how long can they keep their secret before someone gets hurt?
Well, since the synopsis promises “devastating consequences for the whole family”, we imagine that it will not be long.
What happens in Damage, the book upon which Obsession is based?
Josephine Hart's novel Damage follows the story as it is told from William's perspective. The narrator has recently been promoted to the firm, where he is introduced to his son's girlfriend, Anna. He immediately falls in love with her and the two begin a scandalous and secret affair. It's safe to say that it didn't end well.
The book itself was a hit, becoming an instant classic in the genre of erotic obsession and a shameless look at the consequences that come with such acts.
Who stars in Obsession?
The series is set to star Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, Stay Close, The Stranger) as Anna's seductive romantic interest William. Peaky Blinders' Charlie Murphy will star as Anna, with Rish Shah (Strangers, Ms Marvel) as her fiancé Jay. They are also joined by Indira Varma (This Way Up, The Capture) and Pippa Bennett-Warner.
Armitage previously starred in another hit Netflix thriller, The Stranger, which captured the attention of audiences everywhere with its alluring, mysterious plot and blistering pace. He is also currently filming another novel adaptation, The Boy In The Woods, based on the 2022 Maxwell Smart book.
Who works behind the scenes on Obsession?
Obsession was written by Morgan Lloyd-Malcolm and Benji Walters (Noughts And Crosses) with directors Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D'Sa. The series is produced by Gina Carter, who previously worked on See How They Run and 24 Hour Party People.
This isn't the first time Hart's sultry novel has been adapted for the big screen. He got the cinematic treatment in a 1992 feature film starring Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche and Miranda Richardson. It was also a major awards show the following awards season, as Richardson won the Bafta for Best Supporting Actress and was nominated for both the Oscar and Golden Globe categories.
Although the events of the book take place in the 1990s, the new adaptation appears to be a more contemporary take on the story of passionate duplicity.
What are people saying about Obsession?
When feminist playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm first applied to adapt Damage, she set high ambitions for the drama.
"I loved the book which is an amazing erotic thriller, but it was written entirely from a man's point of view. Anna, her lover, is portrayed as some sort of vampire who comes into the family, blows everything up then disappears. Its main function is to serve the purpose that the male protagonist needs.
"I said, 'If I'm going to do this, I want to make sure I dig into Anna and why she acts the way she does. "I wanted to try to understand the characters in the story, and Anna in particular in a way that it wasn't just two-dimensional."
The sex scenes, he says, were written with an unabashedly feminine eye, and early conversations with intimacy coordinator Adelaide Waldrop confirmed they were in full agreement about how sex Morgan had written should be translated to the screen.
“It was about portraying sex in a way that made us aware of connection and obsession without becoming voyeuristic. We also wanted equality in terms of who we watch and who has to show up there. It is not for women to undress and men to keep their clothes on. In fact, it is the opposite that occurs during the first sexual intercourse of this couple. But there has often been a real imbalance here in the past."
When and where can we watch Obsession?
The new Netflix series will run for four episodes and will be available to stream from April 13. Be sure to check back here for more updates.
