I believe the verses include the most of the political references, but here are the lines that I believe are significant and how I have personally read them:

American greatness evaporated before me. Now I feel hopeless. Ripped up my prom dress, running through rose thorns, I spotted the scoreboard and fled for my life.

Growing up in America, we were constantly told in school that we are the best nation in the world, that we are the good people, and that the United States is just magnificent. However, as we millennials have gotten older, it has been clear that there are certain major problems in the American cultural framework that detract from the luster of how great a nation we are supposed to be. When you combine that with the reality that there are no signals that things will improve, it's easy to lose hope.

The "scoreboard" is the 2016 election, which saw Trump elected president and compounded the sense of pessimism.

You play silly games and get ridiculous rewards.

Electing Trump was a terrible decision, and the foolishness he brought to the presidency should have been obvious from the start.

We are so depressed, we paint the town blue.

The American political system is split into two parties, Democrats and Republicans, which are always represented by the colors blue and red on a political map. So painting the town blue would represent a Democratic takeover.

My team is losing! Battered and bruised. I saw high fives. Between the wicked guys. Leave with my head hanging. You are the only one who appears to care.

Her team is the Democratic Party, and the 2016 election was a complete catastrophe. Seeing the repercussions and folks like Mitch McConnell congratulating themselves for manipulating the system was a tremendous stomach hit.

American tales. Burning before me I’m feeling helpless. The damsels are unhappy. Boys will be boys; where are the wise men? Darling, I am terrified.

This underlines how progressive millennials were very disillusioned with American culture after the 2016 election. Women have been rejected again, males are just concerned with maintaining power, and no one is thinking about how to improve things.

And I don't want you to (leave) I don't really want to (fight) 'cause nobody's going to (win) I believe you should come home.

Again, she is disillusioned, and she does not want to become involved in political conflicts since nothing changes.

And I'll never let you (leave) 'Cause I know this is a (battle) That eventually we'll (win).

After having time to analyze everything, she is now reenergized and hopeful that Democrats will finally win.
