There are four major fashion weeks, often referred to as the "Big 4": New York, Paris, London and Milan. But what many may not know is that Paris hosts the industry's first organized fashion week. Since its creation in 1973, the event has become an unmissable event for all fashion lovers, in France and around the world.
Although the official title is Fashion Designers' Week, maximum Paris Fashion Week (or PFW) is the more commonly used term. Paris Fashion Week events are divided into 3 categories: menswear, haute couture and ready-to-wear, the word “haute couture” of which is protected by intellectual property rights. Indeed, the houses must meet strict criteria set by the Chamber of Haute Couture to be eligible. These criteria consist of many rules, one of which is the requirement to create at least 35 looks per year, which must include both day and evening wear.
Few houses are worthy of the label and can be considered creators of “haute couture” collections. Organized by the French Fashion Federation, fashion week includes more than 100 shows with major fashion houses such as Chanel, Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent as well as lesser-known designers. The financial impact of the PFW on French capital amounts to 400 million euros, excluding store sales.
Where is Paris Fashion Week taking place?
Paris Fashion Week takes place twice a year in the French capital, with a spring/summer edition and a fall/winter edition. The dates are set by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode. The haute couture collections are always presented before the ready-to-wear collections, which make up half of the shows.
For a long time, Paris Fashion Week shows were mostly held at the Carrousel du Louvre. During fashion week itself, hundreds of shows and events are also organized in different areas of the city, such as the legendary Chanel shows by Karl Lagerfeld, which have been held for several years at the Grand Palais.
