MIAMI — Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine has reportedly been hospitalized after being beaten at a South Florida LA Fitness steam room, according to video posted to social media.
The rapper, real name Daniel Hernandez and with rainbow-colored hair, suffered cuts to his face and was hospitalized after Tuesday's beating, his attorney Lance Lazzaro told TMZ. CBS News Miami was unable to reach the attorney Tuesday night and it is unclear where the attack took place in South Florida.
Videos posted on various social media sites showed Hernandez on the gym bathroom floor as at least two men kicked and grabbed his hair. 6ix9ine was a social media phenomenon with millions of followers on Instagram before becoming a rising name in hip-hop.
He had a multi-platinum hit, "Fefe" with Nicki Minaj, which peaked at number three on the pop chart, and "Stoopid" with imprisoned rapper Bobby Shmurda.
Lazzaro told TMZ that the rapper, who was not wearing bodyguards, tried to defend himself during the attack but was overpowered and outnumbered. The rapper was released early from federal prison after cooperating with law enforcement to prosecute other gang members.
