Given barely three months to live, 33-year-old Utah mother of two Erika Diarte-Carr is confronting a heartbreaking reality. The young mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 small cell lung cancer in May 2022 while having shoulder surgery. Her path has been physically and emotionally draining; in January she was given again another terrible diagnosis: Cushing Syndrome.
She also subsequently had Cushing Syndrome issues, which gradually degraded her health. She only had three months to live when the doctor later on found she had several metastasized tumors all throughout her body.
Erika Carr therefore created a GoFundMe campaign on September 29 to cover her burial expenses as well as the future of her children after her death. The campaign has generated over $900,000 at the time of writing this article. Writing on the paper, she explained her experience and stated,
I have been discreetly fighting a rare fatal malignancy for previous two years. A high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma, small cell lung cancer (SCLC).
On May 7, 2022... I came into the emergency department due to what I considered to be simply a routine shoulder injury and walked out diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer… By that moment the harm had already been done.
Erika Carr's GoFundMe exceeds initial fundraising target
Erika Carr put up the GoFundMe account with the purpose of obtaining $5,000 to finance her funeral. She got the news of her ailment in 2022, just one day before Mother's Day. She then found out that she also had Cushing Syndrome.
On September 18, 2024, she was given three months to survive. Later, on her GoFundMe page, she stated,
