As I’ve mentioned previously, Bungie is pulling out every last stop imaginable to guarantee The Final Shape’s debut in Destiny is as large as it can be. I’m not going to call it “make or break” but…it must to well. Really good.
Sometimes this extends to features to the game itself gamers have been requesting, but now it’s just…making practically the whole of Destiny 2 free ahead of The Final Shape. Yes, technically Destiny 2 is always “free to play” however it is a minor amount of content these days compared to the entire as expansions and seasons are not included. Now? No more. For now.
From yesterday until June 4, the day of the debut of The Final Shape, Destiny 2 is offering the following free:
Shadowkeep expansion (my least fave, but still content)
Beyond Light expansion (the expansion you need to gain the Stasis subclass)
The Witch Queen expansion (the greatest campaign plot in Destiny 2)
Lightfall (this is just for PlayStation Plus members to claim. Very terrible campaign tale but you have access to the fantastic Strand subclass)
All four current seasons (which have introduced a couple of the finest seasonal activities in the game’s history including The Coil. Others like Onslaught are free already. Good narrative moments too)
This is likely the most material that’s ever been released in Destiny for free, a means to get gamers hooked on the game and play through at least the main portions of the tale before launch. The original Red War campaign the game began with, along with its superb Forsaken expansion which released before Shadowkeep, have been removed out of the game and thrown in a content vault.
I’ve argued for a long while now that old Destiny 2 expansions should become free over time, at least Shadowkeep and Beyond Light by now, but I guess this is the most we can hope for. As someone with 3,500 hours of playing under my belt and nearly that many Destiny articles published, yeah, I recommend this game, despite its problems. It’s enjoyable. It’s a fun game. Confusing to start, possibly. But enjoyable.
The idea here is to A) convince players to purchase those campaigns permanently after the fact to preserve that material (you may at least have to do that with Beyond Light if you want to maintain Stasis), and B) to be psyched enough to buy The Final Shape to keep continuing. While four expansions seems like a lot to catch up on, it’s actually not if you’re simply playing through the campaign and doing nothing else, where each of them is maybe 5-6 hours max. This isn’t Final Fantasy XIV where you have to play 200 hours or more to remain current in many areas.
We’ll see how many players take advantage of this. Again, this is on all platforms sans Lightfall only being on PlayStation Plus. But asserting that their makes ownership extend beyond this timeframe. Enjoy.
