OpenAI recently revealed that a bug exposed some ChatGPT users' sensitive details, such as personal information and credit card details, to other users of the service.
The issue was discovered on Monday when a "small fraction" of users noticed nicknames in their own chat logs that weren't theirs this week. The problem is much more serious than that.
What did the error do?
"Some users were able to see the first and last name, email address, payment address, last four digits of a credit card number, and credit card expiration date of another current user," read a statement from OpenAI.
According to the statement, 1.2% of ChatGPT Plus subscribers have accidentally accessed confidential information. The San Francisco-based company has around 100 million customers, but it's unclear how many of them are paying for the service.
The news broke when a Twitter user advised others to be "careful" with the chatbot because it had shown it other people's discussion topics. A photo of her inventory revealed titles like "Girl Chases Butterflies," "Books on Human Behavior," and "Boy Survives Solo Adventures," but it was unclear which ones weren't hers.
“Be careful when using ChatGPT,” they warned. Your conversations may be shared with other people! Today I was shown another user's chat logs. I couldn't see the details, but I could see the titles of their recent conversations."
Solve the problem
The leak overshadowed OpenAI's major upgrade to ChatGPT, which now allows it to connect to the internet and provide users with real-time data.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on Wednesday that the company is addressing a "major issue" that threatens the anonymity of conversations on its platform. The now fixed bug was found in the open source Redis client library called redis-py.
"We believe the number of individuals whose data has actually been shared with someone else is extremely low," Open AI said in a statement.
ChatGPT plugins
As the company strives to keep its customers' data secure, it is also helping to improve their ChatGPT experience.
OpenAI has released plugins that allow the Chabot to connect to the Internet and third-party websites and display sports scores, stock quotes, meal reservations, and other information. Expedia, FiscalNote, Instacart, KAYAK, Klarna, Milo, OpenTable, Shopify, Slack, Speak, Wolfram and Zapier developed the first ChatGPT extensions.
Microsoft's Bing API also has a new plugin that allows ChatGPT to search the web for up-to-date information. According to industry experts who have evaluated the upgrade, ChatGPT will "render thousands of websites completely obsolete".
