Hawaiian Macaroni Salad, a traditional pasta salad I tried in Hawaii over 20 years ago. It is traditionally served on a lunch plate with the bold flavor of the grill. This subtly flavored macaroni salad recipe is one of our family favorites.

What’s in Ono Hawaiian Macaroni Salad Recipe

Pasta: Traditional macaroni or pasta are commonly used. I love using the cellentani pasta which is more of a curly corkscrew shape.
Carrots: Carrot sticks are quick and easy to make, but diced or shredded carrots work great. Mayonnaise: It is best to use a quality brand called mayo. Don't skimp on this ingredient. Best Foods or even Dukes Mayo stronger and stronger flavor is wonderful.
Sugar – This recipe uses sugar. I was a Dixie Sugar fan. It's a fine white sugar and I like the subtle flavor it imparts
Vinegar - Apple cider vinegar is best. White vinegar can also be used in a pinch.
Milk - I use 2% milk, but this could easily be made with 1% milk or even almond milk.
Broth: When pressure cooking pasta, use broth (chicken or vegetable broth). Extra flavor is imparted to the noodles. This is my secret tip for a fantastic recipe!

Adding green onions or even grated onions in the recipe is purely optional.

Close the lid and set the "Manual" (pressure cook) mode to high for 4 minutes, with 4 minutes of natural release (NR) then quick release (QR) to get the residual pressure to cook the macaroni.

  • Add chopped carrots and apple cider vinegar to pasta and stir. Place in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  • In another bowl, mix the mayonnaise, sugar and milk. Stir to combine.
  • Pour over cooled pasta.
  • Add garlic if desired
  • Turn to cover. Cover and refrigerate. Marinate for 4 hours or overnight.
  • If needed, add an additional 1-2 tablespoons of milk to achieve your desired consistency.
