One of the reasons why Chrome is the most used browser is that it offers many features that allow you to customize your experience by supporting a variety of extensions and other features. Extensions basically give your browser extra functionality and users choose Chrome because it is quite compatible with the extension among other browsers.

Meanwhile, Chrome extensions can usually be installed directly from their respective online store pages, and the process is quite simple. Although this is not always the case, it is rather pleasant since the extensions are installed automatically. Now the question arises what to do if your favorite extension is removed from the Chrome Store or you prefer to save the extension files without installing them. Luckily, you can download and save the Chrome extension as CRX, so you can save the extension file to your computer and access it easily.

This means that even if some of the extensions you're using are removed from the Chrome Store or updated to a version you don't like, the latest extension is still available as long as it's already saved on your PC. CRX files are simply a solution to bypass Chrome Web Store and install browser extensions. Also, most users are unaware of the specific procedure required to install these CRX files as browser extensions. Therefore, this article describes several methods to download and save Chrome extensions as CRX files and add them to your browser.

3 Ways to Download and Save Chrome Extension as CRX

We will discuss three different methods to download and save the Chrome extension as CRX on your computer:

Method 1 – Repackage Installed Chrome Extension in CRX File

This method works for you if you have already added the Chrome extension you want to download and save as a .crx file in your browser. Just follow the steps below to repackage the extension:

1. In Chrome, type the following address and press Enter to open the list of extensions.

2. Enable developer mode to view the ID of the extension you want to register as CRX.

3. Press Windows + E to open File Explorer, navigate to This PC and open C drive.

4. Select User and touch the username you are using (the username will be "User" if you have never set a username before).

5. Tap the View menu at the top of the screen and enable the Hidden Items option (AppData is always hidden and without enabling the Hidden Items option you won't find it)

6. Navigate to AppData and open it.

7. Then click Local > Google > Chrome.

8. Touch User Data and click Default; If you are using a different user profile in Chrome, you need to click on it instead of Default. For this article, I selected profile 4 instead of Standard because that's the profile I have the extensions shown in step one.

9. Click Extensions to open extension files on your computer.

10. Navigate to the folder with the same name as the extension ID you want to download.

11. Return to the Chrome Extensions page and click Package Extension.

12. Click Browse in front of the extension root directory and navigate to the extensions folder we mentioned earlier in step 9.

13. Select the file in the extension's folder and tap Select Folder.

14. Then click Package Extension.

15. On the resulting page, select OK.

16. Now go back to the extensions folder and open it.

You will find the CRX file, which you can now copy to another folder so that you can keep it.
