Both Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino started their careers in show business in 2006 on separate networks on reality shows. Since then, they have followed their individual paths: Paulo as a flexible dramatic actor and Kim in the romance area with her love team companions. Paulo revealed his wish to act alongside Kim on his move to ABS-CBN in 2011, but few could have foreseen that they would finally team on a project. As they say, though, fate hath its way.
Starting in the dark heavy drama "Linlang," the KimPau combo engaged in a lovely talk about their successful collaboration which has now gone over to rom-com in an episode of "On Cue" with ABS-CBN News's MJ Felipe.
Paulo said he wanted to be flexible to the utmost and that working with Kim will allow him to investigate new sides of himself when reminded of the request he made back in 2011. Kim, meantime, remembered Paulo as a shy man in the corner when they first met at a Star Magic Ball. She was also reserved to approach him since, unlike now, she was not as gregarious.
Not surprisingly, it took some time before they developed thus close while working on "Linlang," maybe midway through the show. Given the clear discrepancy between their past and present personalities, "What's Wrong With Secretary Kim," passed over to their follow-up project, still had a wall to break.
Unlike in the drama-intensive "Linlang," where he was more inside his comfort zone, "What's Wrong With Secretary Kim" presents them a fresh reversal of roles, with Kim guiding Paulo into her realm of romantic comedy.
For Kim, Rom-coms have developed into rather a skill. She has somehow picked up the recipe for "kilig" scenes. She did stress, though, that some things—including chemistry—are impossible to replicate. One-way, pero yung kilig naman is hindi. Dapat two-way siya para mag-transform sa audience, she said, appreciating Paulo's input to their chemistry. For Paulo, the genre also highlighted his more natural side.
Having worked with other performers before, Kim was asked what distinguishes Paulo. She spoke about seeing his several interpretations of a brief scene that moved from intense drama to lighthearted romanticism.
"So, parang nakita ko na 'yung Paulo Na masayahin, Paulo Na galit, Paulo Na sobrang devoted at seryoso, at Paulo Na corny. Ang Dami niyang pinakitang Paulo. She most importantly respects his commitment and self-awareness.
When asked the same question, Paulo said, "Her mood sets the mood of the set. Her vitality is contagious." The scene is happy if she is happy. If she's quiet, parang "yung buong set rin tahimik."
While KimPau may not have begun their relationship with teenybopper romances like many love teams, viewers of all ages find them interesting and naturally 'nakaka-good feelings.' Kim said, "Parang, ha? Even we are shocked at fans' kilig reactions to their basic on- and off-cam interactions. Young people, what meaning lahat ng bagay?
Though shocked, they value the fact that others observe their behavior and find happiness in it. Speaking of which, admirers were thrilled to see Paulo's black shirt, Kim's white, and Taylor Swift top matching. And we bet all KimPau shippers will beam ear to ear as Kim admits the shirt was her "pasalubong," brought from Singapore where she flew for just one day to see Taylor's show.
KimPau, whose characters in their new digital comedy, Secretary Kim and BMC, participated in a lighthearted Q&A session, offered a glimpse of their delightful chemistry. In "bato bato pick," the winner selected a question and the loser in each round would respond to it.
Kim missed in the first two rounds, thereby giving Paulo the option to choose questions from a bowl. "What's cute about me?" he said aloud, to which Kim answered, "Everything. Cute siya kasi hindi siya nagsasalita.
Then, asked a hypothetical question regarding, if Kim were a relationship, what term of endearment she would most like? She advised "Mine."
Paulo, being the polite man he is, voluntarily embraced loss so he could answer two questions as well. When asked how he would make apologies to Kim should she be offended, he considered cooking her favourite meal.
