CBS Philadelphia, PA According to several sources, the Philadelphia 76ers created a major splash at the beginning of NBA free agency by landing nine-time All-Star Paul George on a max contract.
ESPN reports that George signed a $212 million, four-year contract.
Throughout the offseason, George, 34, was connected to the Sixers as a potential addition to the starting lineup, joining former MVP Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, who made his first All-Star appearance and took home the NBA's Most Improved Player of the Year Award.
On Saturday night, George declined his $48 million player option for the 2024–25 season, thereby ending his relationship with the Los Angeles Clippers. He chose the Sixers over playing for his hometown Clippers again, where he spent the previous five seasons. There were rumors that the Orlando Magic posed a danger to sign George.
George was named to the All-Star squad during his 2023–24 Clippers season. He averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and shot 41% on over eight 3-point tries per game.
When George signed with the Clippers before the 2019–20 season, he was a different player. Even so, he's a better option than Tobias Harris, who was Philadelphia's third-scoring option before to Embiid and Maxey. Despite his historical flaws in the playoffs, George's game complements Embiid and Maxey well. After playing with Jimmy Butler, Ben Simmons, and James Harden, George will be Embiid's newest running partner in Philadelphia.
This coming Sixers season, everyone's attention will be focused on George's availability and health. Although he appeared in 74 games the previous season, it was the first time he has done so since the 2018–19 campaign. George never participated in more than 56 regular season games between 2019 and 2023.
In order to construct a roster around Embiid and Maxey—who is also expected to receive a max deal extension that could bring him $205 million over five years—the Sixers had a plenty of salary space and assets at their disposal going into the summer. The Sixers have allegedly agreed to agreements with veterans Eric Gordon and Andre Drummond in addition to George.
Building a contender to advance the Sixers past the second round of the playoffs and back to the NBA Finals is the mission assigned to Daryl Morey, the team's president of basketball. The Sixers haven't made it past the second round since 2001. And with the Boston Celtics winning the NBA Finals in June, he'll have to do it in an Eastern Conference that is fiercely competitive.
Last season, Embiid struggled with a number of ailments, including Bell's palsy, and the Sixers lost in the playoffs once more. The Knicks, who had just acquired Mikal Bridges, a former standout player at Villanova, eliminated them in six games.
The Sixers are anticipated to be aggressive in free agency and will probably try to bring back some of their own free agents, even after signing George.
Last week, the Sixers selected Justin Edwards, a resident of Philadelphia, on a two-way deal. They also selected UCLA center Adem Bona and Duke guard Jared McCain in the 2024 NBA draft.
