I am not typical since I am also a business owner (my own small consulting firm with 1 other developer and a sales person) and I am self-proclaimed vampire (not a rarity among software engineers). But here goes my typical day:
1. Wake up around noon
2. Spend an hour or so getting ready for the day
3. Do my 30 second commute to the office (the desk in the living room)
4. Check quora/twitter/linkedin (all are informal marketing and communications tools for me -- note the way to do marketing on Quora is just answer a lot of questions giving my best honest unbiased answers without advertising my services directly [against Quora policy])
5. Scan the job listings on eLance/UpChuck
6. See what if any calls I need to make clients and/or emails to return
7. Dive right into my coding and/or the project I am working on (when no tech project do business planning or working on long term R&D)
8. Take lunch (aka dinner) around 6 pm
9. Run some errands if needed
