The next "28 Days Later" movie is finally coming out, more than 6,000 days later.
On Tuesday, Sony Pictures released the first trailer for "28 Years Later," the much awaited follow-up to the beloved horror movies "28 Days Later" and "28 Weeks Later."
A group of kids are shown watching "Teletubbies" in the unsettling teaser before a woman storms in and hurriedly dumps off another youngster while telling them to keep quiet. "Teletubbies" keeps playing while blood splatters on the TV and scenes of zombie mayhem are shown.
The video then cuts to a small, guarded island colony inhabited by apocalyptic survivors. Although the community's identity is kept a secret, spectators can observe that its members have assigned responsibilities, such as keeping watch over a watch tower. With one foreboding scene showing a massive pile of skulls encircled by pillars of bones, the teaser implies that some sinister truths are yet hidden. "What will humanity become?" is the question posed in the movie's tagline.
Fans believe that the malnourished zombie in the trailer's last, split-second shot resembles Cillian Murphy.
Cillian Murphy will make a "surprising" comeback in "28 Years Later."
Whether that is the Academy Award-winning actor or not is unknown. Tom Rothman, the head of Sony Motion Pictures Group, had previously hinted to Deadline that the "Oppenheimer" star will return "in a surprising way and in a way that grows." Additionally, according to Rothman, "28 Years Later" is "not in any way a literal sequel."
Murphy played Jim in "28 Days Later" (2002), and his character lived through the movie's events. The 2007 follow-up, "28 Weeks Later," which focused on fresh characters, did not use him again.
'28 Years Later' stars who?
Starring in "28 Years Later" are Ralph Fiennes, Alfie Williams, Jack O'Connell, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Jodie Comer. Murphy is an executive producer on the movie, but he was left off of Sony's official cast list on Tuesday.
The masses of people in the franchise are technically not zombies, despite the fact that the films have a striking resemblance to zombie flicks; rather, they are afflicted with a "rage virus." The monsters in the original "28 Days Later" were famous for moving, unlike the sluggish zombies in films like "Night of the Living Dead."
'28 Years Later': What is it about?
In its own words, Sony calls the movie a "terrifying new story set in the world created by '28 Days Later.'"
"It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected," the synopsis states. One such group of survivors resides on a tiny island that is only reachable by a single, fiercely guarded causeway from the mainland. One of the gang members encounters mysteries, marvels, and horrors that have changed not just the infected but even other survivors when he sets out on a mission from the island into the shadowy interior of the mainland.
'28 Years Later' will be available when?
On June 20, "28 Years Later" will be released in cinemas.
Again directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, the original "28 Days Later" creative team is back for the follow-up. With a sequel, "28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple," already in the works from "Candyman" director Nia DaCosta, the movie is anticipated to start a new trilogy.
