The original B-Boys and B-Girls used the word "Breaking" to refer to the way they danced, which was in between the breaks of a DJ track. The name "breakdancing" is more widely used. To respect the event's culture and past and to keep it real, the Olympics have kept the same name throughout the whole thing.
Breaking began as a dance style at block parties in New York in the 1970s. By the 1980s, groups like the Rock Steady Crew and the New York City Breakers were making it popular. They are thought to have come up with some of the moves you'll see on the biggest sports stage in two days.
Techniques in the sport include footwork done while standing, called "top rock," and moves done on the floor, called "down rock." In Breaking, you can also use tricks. The freeze and the power moves (twists and spins) are their names. 'Baby freeze' is a well-known phrase. In the same way, all stop moves in Breaking are when breakers hold poses with their heads or hands. Another reason to go to La Concorde tomorrow!
Battle of the Year has been the world's longest-running Breaking competition. It has been held every year since its first event in Germany in 1990, when it was called the International Breakdance Cup. The IOC recognised the World DanceSport Federation as a government body in 1997.
So, why is breaking an Olympic sport? It is important to the International Olympic Committee that the games include sports that are fun for people of all ages. As part of this attempt, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing have been added to the Games in the last few years. Breaking is a great way to follow this trend.
Breaking was first used at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, which were watched by more than a million people. This proved that the sport was interesting to younger people because of how it was played and to older people because they wanted to watch it.
The sport was added to the Olympics for real on December 7, 2021. Breaking is not going to be a part of the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
